The Group of 20 (G-20) is a global policy forum comprised of 20 countries, represented by the world’s 20 largest economies (19 countries and one seat for the EU). Its purpose is to discuss significant challenges facing the global economy and collaborate on finding viable solutions to those challenges. After the Asian financial crisis in September 1999, the Group of Twenty (G-20) was established as a forum to help coordinate responses to other international economic crises, particularly in emerging markets. These markets were not represented by the Group of Seven at the time (G-7).
The European Union, along with the United States, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, and Turkey are all members of the Group of Twenty (G20). At the moment, G20 members are responsible for more than 80 percent of the world’s GDP, 75 percent of global trade, and 60 percent of the world’s population.

In 1998, the United States attempted to coordinate a collective response to the Asian financial crisis, which led to meetings with a G-22, the forerunner of the current G-20. Hong Kong, Malaysia, Poland, and Thailand joined the current G-20 countries (minus Turkey and the EU) to form the G-22. Since the G-22 was a temporary organization formed to deal with the Asian financial crisis, its meetings ceased after the crisis was over.
